Collins has been selected as the 2005 Engineer of the Year by theUtahEngineers Council. He graduated at the top of his class and as Valedictorian fromUtah State University with both B.S. andMasters de- grees in engineering. He worked for CH2MHill for 19 years. While there he worked onmany important Utah projects including the Utah Lake/Jordan River FloodManagement Programwhere he was Project Manager. Mr. Collins has been active in professional societies being the chairman of the Utah Engineers Council, ACEC and the In- termountain Section of the AmericanWater Works Association. He presently serves on the ACEC Legislative committee. In 1997 Mr. Collins started Bowen, Collins &Associates, an engineering firm that specializes in water, wastewater, storm water, and ground water fields. Currently Mr. Collins is working on the Master Plan of System Improvements for the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake & Sandy. He is also the project manager for the Provo Reservoir Canal Enclosure Project in Utah County. ■ 2005 Engineer of the Year 2005 Engineering Educator of the Year Dr. Evert C. Lawton Dr. Evert C. Lawton has been selected by the Utah Engineers Council as the 2005 Engi- neering Educator of the Year. He is a professor with the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Utah. His duties include both teach- ing and research in geotechnical en- gineering, as well as departmental and university committee assignments and service to the community. Dr. Lawton began his career in Structural Engi- neering at Virginia Department of Highways and Transporta- tion, Richmond, Virginia, and holds professional registra- tion licensees in states. In June of 1984 Dr. Lawton joined Washington State Uni- versity, in Pullman, Washington, as a teaching and research as- sistant for geotechnical engineering courses. Research projects for the school included construction control of pile driving, dynamic densification of sand, and effects of wetting induced collapse on deep compacted fills. Dr. Lawton became an Assistant Professor with the Depart- ment of Civil Engineering, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Floridia 1997, where he continued to teach geotechnical engi- neering courses until 1991 when he joined the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Utah. ■
