At the banquet we will celebrate with the awarding of 2006 UEC Engineer of the Year, Engineering Edu- cator of the Year, New Faces in Engineer- ing, MESA Teacher, and University Stu- dent Scholarship Awards. This will be our third year at the Grand Hall, Union Pacific Station, The Gateway, which is a beautiful venue for this event. Our Key- note Speaker this year is Stan Checketts, Founder & CEO of S&S Worldwide, Inc., the leading manufacturer of family thrill rides and roller coasters. So, we will again be treated to an engaging speaker. My background in electrical engi- neering naturally drew me to the Insti- tute for Electrical and Electronics Engi- neers (IEEE), which is perhaps the larg- est of all professional engineering soci- eties with over 365,000 members in over 150 countries around the world. But, IEEE is just one of the member societies that make up the Utah Engineers Coun- cil. It has truly been a pleasure working UEC CHA I R ’ S MESSAGE ▲ BY PAUL OESTREICH, U EC CHA I R 2005-2006 Paul C. Oestreich is a registered patent at- torney with Morriss O’Bryant Compagni, PC and an active member of the IEEE. with the volunteer members of the UEC Board and its elected Officers. I encourage you and your colleagues to participate in your local sections and chapters of your professional engineering societies here in Utah. It is through such soci- eties that the interests of engineers can be heard and acted upon. As a patent attorney, I also have the pleasure of working with inventors on a daily basis. It has been my experience that there is no limit to the human imagina- tion. While there is no requirement for an engineering degree to be an inventor, it has also beenmy experience that engineers are best positioned for performing the con- ception and reduction to practice of in- ventions worthy of a patent. The Engineers Week Banquet is a wonderful opportunity for you to mingle with your peers and students from the many specialties within engineering and related fields. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible. LET US CEL- EBRATE ENGINEERING! ■
