I believe that engineers should strive to earn their professional credentials, conduct their daily business as professionally as possible, and then let oth- ers know how they are benefiting from their engineering expertise. Our local chapter consists of approxi- mately 140 active members. Our chapter meets on the first Friday of each month. We have established a schedule of outstand- ing programs and speakers to bring us the latest technological topics for our members and guests. Our program schedule as well as other chapter information is available at www.utahashrae.org . Our local chapter leaders had the fore- sight to establish a scholarship fund about 12 years ago. Our chapter promotes engineering activities and ASHRAE participation at all levels of education. Traditionally we have awarded two $1000 scholarships annually to college applicants who show a propensity toward pursuing an ASHRAE related career path. Our scholarship fund is self sustaining now and we have an option of awarding up to three $1000 scholarships this year. We are very proud and excited about that. I have personally been a member of ASHRAE since 1988. I have never seen so many changes occurring at the national soci- ety level as they are right now. As eager as I am to promote my own theme for the year, it pales in comparison to the new initiatives put forth by Society President Terry Townsend and his leadership team. Terry’s theme this year is “The ASHRAE Promise: A Sustain- able Future”. Terry has put ASHRAE on course to become the worldwide information leader for sustainable building design and operation. He has established a step by step series of measurable goals where ASHRAE Energy Building Design Guides shall progress every 3 or 4 years to the point where most new buildings should be able to reach a “net-zero” energy use by the year 2020. In addition, the ASHRAE home office in Atlanta is undergoing a complete makeover to become a gold level LEED rated facility. ASHRAE has recently overhauled its website at www. ashrae.org and has also included a link to the new website www.engineeringforsustain- ability.org. ASHRAE is truly “Walking the Talk” these days with energy saving improve- ment measures. ASHRAE is challenging all of its members to provide sustainable building designs for their clients, conduct ASHRAE meetings and conferences in the most sustainable efficient environment as possible, conduct their everyday business in the most sustainable manner possible, and finally conduct their personal lives in the most sustainable manner possible. What are you doing to reduce your energy footprint today? Are you walking the talk? What can you do tomorrow or next year? There are many, many more details re- garding ASHRAE’s sustainability movement. I urge you to visit the websites above to learn more about it. ASHRAE: The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers advances the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.
