UTAH ENGINEERS COUNCIL JOURNAL 33 said, “Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been.” Looking back over the years since ASME was founded in 1880, engineers have changed the world. Cars take us everywhere – to work, to the grocery store, around the corner and around the country. Airplanes take us to longer distances, connecting the world. Satel- lites peer down on the globe, allowing us to both study our world and talk to a neighbor on its other side. Elevators, refrigeration, and air conditioning have made it possible for us to live closer together and in less agreeable climates. The world is now smaller and more intercon- nected than ever before, and that trend will only continue. ASME’s stated vision is: “To be the premier organization for promoting the art, science and practice of mechanical and multidis- ciplinary engineering and allied sciences to our diverse communities throughout the world.” The art, science, and practice of engineering will continue to change our world, making it a better, healthier, safer, happier place to live. I challenge all the engineers to take a moment and remem- ber why it was that you became an engineer, and to use your talents, skills, knowledge, and experience to make the world a better place, in whatever way you can. I’ll be out there with you – as soon as I’m done building this Lego plane… Mr. Haws is associated with ATK-Thiokol Launch Systems in Brigham City, Utah.
