10 Martone of UEC member societies. It is one-stop shopping to learn what’s going on with our member societies and is an invaluable resource for Utah engineers. Although the UEC Web site existed before Web sites were cool, it is in need of an upgrade to make it even more beneficial. Any volunteer Web designers out there? UEC can use your help. Let us know! Concluding Remarks I often get the question: What does the UEC do? I’ve done my best to address that question in this message. Occasionally, I get a question from a member of one of our UEC member societies along the lines of: What benefit do I (i.e. themember) get frommy society belonging and paying dues to the UEC? I bristle when I hear that question because it’s kind of selfish. Certainly, individual society members benefit fromUEC programs such as this Journal and the E-Week banquet, but I believe the true value of an asso- ciation with the UEC is on a much higher playing field. Consider the UEC goals that underpin our core programs: • To advance the art and science of engineering for the general welfare of the people of Utah • To promote cooperation among the various branches of en- gineering and science in Utah • To develop recommendations regarding public policies wherein the application of the art and science of engineering will contribute to the general welfare • To promote research and studies in engineering areas • To promote dissemination of knowledge and information in the various fields of engineering and science • To foster public recognition of the engineering profession • To maintain high professional standards among our members • To work for the advancement of engineering education • To provide a forum for cooperative action by our member societies on matters beyond the scope of their individual organizations Maybe it is old fashioned, but I believe every practicing engineer has an obligation to give back to society and help sustain our profession. The UEC provides a convenient, high quality, and enduring forum to do that in Utah plus it adds synergy multiply- ing the impact of each single individual or engineering society. It is my honor and privilege to serve as UEC chair. We absolutely could not do what we do without our sponsors, contributors, member society volunteers, and Journal advertisers. My sincere thank you! I suspect I am no different than other UEC chairs since 1950 in thinking carefully about UEC core programs: Are we do- ing the right things? How can we improve? Should we do more or less? How can we sustain our programs? Your feedback is critically important. Our UEC leaders think we are on the right track, but we need to know from you whether or not you agree. We are always open to suggestions about how we can better meet your needs and the needs of our profession. We look forward to receiving your constructive suggestions and valuable ideas. Adeius The Time Is Always Right To Do The Right Thing 1 This is the 21st year of my association with the Utah Engineers Council as a representative of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. Our society in Utah represents board certi- fied environmental engineers in various environmental specialties. In that role it has been an honor and privilege to serve the Council and the engineering community in various capacities from Engineers Week Chairman to Council Chairman. In 1992, the council published the first issue of this journal. As we enter the 20th year of the publication, it brings back memories of collaboration among members representing diverse interests, and their labor of love in producing the journal. After lead- ing this effort for the last five years, I believe that the time has come for me to move on. In last few years, Mr. Dannie Pollock has ably supported me, and is now ready to take over this effort. Mr. Pollock will further the efforts of all his predecessors and take this publication to a next higher level. I sincerely express my ap- preciation and gratitude to several members who contributed to this effort. That’s the way it is … so long. Kiran L.
