55 The Structural Engineers Association of Utah (SEAU) was organized in August 1980. In its original charter it outlined six objec- tives as listed below: 1. Promote acquaintance and understand- ing among Structural Engineers. 2. Promote technical expertise. 3. Promote legislation and codes relating to Structural Engineering. 4. Increase public awareness of Structural Engineering. 5. Discourage unethical and detrimental practice. 6. Promote high standards of Structural Engineering in the best interests of clients, community, public and the profession. To help achieve these objectives, SEAU is supported by members of the association by volunteering time to serve on commit- tees. Some of these committees are the Codes Committee, Technical Committee, Licensing Committee, Ethics Committee, Legislature Committee, Emergency Re- sponse Committee, Seismic Committee, and so on. Some of the accomplishments of these committees has included getting legisla- tion passed to create a separate profes- sional license for structural engineers for the design of complex and/or important buildings by the Licensing Committee, the Emergency Response Committee working with the State of Utah in creating plans for providing building assessment following a major seismic event and at- tempting to get legislation passed to provide seismic surveys of school build- ings (K-12) to help provide safe buildings for our children.
