19 E-Week Banquet News G UESTS BEGAN TO arrive at the Adobe Building in Lehi for our Utah Engineers Council Annual EngineersWeek Awards Event on Saturday Evening, February 22nd around 6:30pm. At the lobby, we were given guest badges that gave us ac- cess to the public areas of the building. Off the Lobby is a grand room called the “Hanger” where we were treated to a delicious dinner catered by Adobe’s on-site catering service, “Café Bon Appetit,” led by the catering manager, Terry Davies. We enjoyed a buffet style meal with selections of braised bone in pork chops with pear compote or apple wood smoked chicken with grilled fennel. The food was delightful and the time to eat and mingle in this auspicious space with views to our stunning Utah scenery started off the evening in a very positive way. We then moved to the “Alpha/Bravo” room upstairs to a theatre style set up for our awards presentations. We first highlighted our scholarship recipients this year. We were able to present $1,500.00 scholarships to engineering students at Brigham Young University, University of Utah and Utah State University. The Gerald H. Piele scholarship was again presented by the The newsLINK Group and Van Cott, Bagley, Cornwall, & McCarthy, PC, and awarded to an electrical engineering student from Weber State University. We applaud each of these students in their efforts to improve our world through engineering. This year’s Mesa Teacher of the Year, Andy Mark, was highlighted. Andy is amath teacher at Granite Park Jr. Highwhere he is respected and appreciated by his students for his efforts to make math fun! We had seven Educator of the Year Nominees this year, all of which are deserving of accolades for furthering engineering in our state and world through education. This year’s theme for Engineers Week, “Let’s Make a Difference,” highlights the efforts each of the Educators of the Year Nominees is striving to achieve. Ten Fresh Faces of Engineering Nominees were submitted this year. It is apparent that these young engineers are “Making a Dif- ference” in each of their respective companies for the clients that they serve. They collectively provide many hours of community service to our associations and neighborhoods as they individually share engineering skills through service. The Engineer of the Year Nominees included eight of our state’s highly respected engineers, representing a wide spread of en- gineering disciplines and experience. As a state we continue to expand our engineering services throughout Utah and the world. We are proud of our engineering heritage and grateful to our Nominees this year for furthering the art of Engineering. The eveningwas capped by a presentation given by one of Adobe’s Co-Founders and Chairman of the Board, Dr. John Warnock. Dr. Warnock shared with us the story of the personal computers evolution from his personal experience. It was incredible to hear how the personal computer, programming and support devices were actually functioning very well much earlier than most of the world knew. Thanks Dr. Warnock for your intriguing discussion and for sharing with us the connection between the birth of the personal computer and the great state of Utah.
