45 Varian’s panels can capture up to 60 images per second, which is the fastest in the industry and is fast enough to produce a moving image of a beating heart. The Varian Utah facility is commit- ted to sustainability. In 2011, there were over $24 million savings in energy and water efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, green- ing their supply chain, employee and community involvement and in product reuse and recycling programs. Among these was an employee garden set adjacent to the Varian factory where tomatoes, corn, radishes, cucumbers, squash, were planted and harvested. Varian is a member of the Utah Pol- lution Prevention Association, Salt Lake City e2 Business, Industrial Energy Efficiency Program, Net Impact Utah, RockyMountain Power Blue Sky Visionary Partner and the Utah Recycling Alliance. Varian has received numerous awards and achievements from the community. They include the Excellence in Energy Efficiency Award and Certificate of Appreciation from the Utah Office of Energy Development & Utah Industrial Energy Efficiency Program; the P2 Association Achievement Award from the Utah Pollution Prevention Association; a Recycling Achievement Award from Interwest Paper, Inc & Pro Recycling Group, Greenwise Businesses; and a Blue Sky Visionary Partner award from Rocky Mountain Power. In 1995 the Utah Quality Council recognized the first recipients of its quality award, known as the Governor’s Award to Varian X-Ray products. In 2004 Varian’s X-Ray Products received a pollution prevention award for pollution prevention efforts in 2003. This was Varian’s fourth year winning this award. In 2009 the Silver Healthy Workplace Award was given to Varian. The award was for fostering a workplace environment that helps employees to improve their health and nutrition. The award was given by the Utah Department of Health’s Council for Worksite Health Promotion, a group that advises Utah-based companies on how to better care for the health and wellness of their employees. In 2012, The Most Improved Supplier Award was given to the X-Ray Products Flat-Panel imager team by a major OEM x-ray manufacturer, a maker of medical and dental imaging systems, for process and quality improvements in the manufacturing of flat-panel digital image detectors. Varian is respected in the Utah engineering community. Over 115 patents have been awarded the engineers at the Salt Lake facil- ity. Today, the engineering department at Varian employs over 30 engineers and technicians. They tend to be long term engineers that enjoy the culture, the challenge and working on life saving products.
