20 Fresh Face in Engineering Nominees ACEC: IMANUEL S. ASWANDI, P.E. Company Employed: J-U-B Engineers, Inc. Salt Lake City, Ut BS, Civil Engineering, University of Utah MS, Civil Engineering , University of Utah Although only 28, Imanuel’s award winning transportation engineering and traffic study work has shown him to be a rising star in the Utah engineering community. His impressive accomplishments of earning a master’s degree in civil engineering, his professional engineer- ing license and his professional traffic opera- tions engineer credentials in the same year show his early dedication to the profession. His desire to give back while in the beginning of his career by promoting engineering to elementary and junior high school students, mentoring youth with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House show his dedi- cation to his community. AIAA: JOHN C. METCALF Company Employed: Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, Clearfield, UT BS, Physics Weber State University Mr. Metcalf began his involvement with the Utah Section of AIAA in 2010 as Chair for the Weber State University Student Branch and has continued to serve as a professional member since his graduation. Mr. Metcalf was the Secre- tary in 2010-2011 and has led many of our Outreach activities for the past 2 years as an at- large officer. As a Systems Engineer at the Northrop Grumman Corporation in Clearfield, Utah, Mr. Metcalf plays an important role in the sustainment of the Minuteman III ICBM weapon system. Aside from his engineering responsibilities, he has continued to volunteer at the Weber, Davis, and Salt Lake Valley sci- ence and engineering fairs at the district and regional level as a judge and has helped to coordinate an expanding Engineer Week event at Northrop Grumman and Hill Air Force Base. ASME: PRASAD WEERAKOON Company Employed: Merit Medical Systems, Inc., South Jordan, UT BS, Mechanical Engineering, BYU, Provo, Ut. MS, Mechanical Engineering, BYU, Provo, Ut. Mr. Weerakoon is originally from Sri Lanka and came to the US in 2005 to begin his studies at BYU. He completed his BS in 2009 and his MS in 2012. He created the world’s first Multi-User Finite Element Analysis Pre-Processor using Sandia Labs’ CUBIT, where multiple people can remotely log on to the same model and create/ manipulate geometry and prepare the model/assembly for finite element analysis. He started working as a Project Engineer at Merity Medical in 2012. While at Merity, he headed compliance, material change and quality improvement projects. He successfully made Merit’s products comply with Europe’s RoHS. He redesigned a digi- tal inflation device. This project will improve quality and manufactur- ability, double the manufacturing capacity and will decrease the cost per unit by about 20%. ASPE: STEVE MATHIAS Company Employed: Van Borum & Frank As- sociates, Inc., Salt Lake City, Ut. BS, Mechanical Engineering, BYU, Provo, Ut. Steve has provided plumbing designs on some large and complex projects. One that stands out is the Provo City Center Temple which is the former Provo Tabernacle. After being damaged by fire it was repurposed to its current use which required additional building square footage. This was provided by submerging more structure underground and into the high water table of the existing site.. ITE: GRANT FARNSWORTH, P. E. Company Employed: HNTB Corporation, Salt Lake City, Ut. BS, Civil Engineering, BYU, Provo, Ut. MS, Civil Engineering, Perdue University, Lafayette, Indiana Grant has played big roles on some of the biggest projects in the country including UDOT’s I-15 CORE and UDOT’s I-15 Point Project. His expertise is focused on the bleed- ing edge of technology in traffic engineer- ing and ATMS. Grant is numbered among the elite engineers that has developed hands-on experience with UDOT’s signal system. He has been a strong contributor as UDOT leaps closer to a world-class signal status. Even though he is still a young engineer he is also leading discussions around the nation on the latest development in congestion reporting using innovative data collection technology. SAME: LT. MICHAEL ARCHIBALD Company Employed: 75th Civil Engineer Group, Hill Air Force Base, Layton, Ut. BS, Civil Engineering, United States Air Force Academy, Colorado At Hill AFB in August 2014, Lt Archibald resumed his duties in the 75th Civil Engineer Group a(CEG) as a project manager. He was assigned 3 projects valued at $3.6M. The projects consisted of a mezzanine design and remodel project, a truck inspection lane and turn around at one of our satellite locations and a project building the Aerospace Center for Education in the Hill Air Force Base Museum.
