13 Student Name: RAPHAEL CHANUT Objective: BSME Institution: University of Utah Name of Scholarship: Utah Engineers Council Scholarship Sponsor: BAE Systems Raphael is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at the University of Utah. He has been on the Dean’s list every semester he has attended at the U. His interests in engineering are focused towards aerospace in which field he has worked as an intern in France with the international company, UTC Aerospace. He also has volun- teered at the Hill Aerospace Museum near Ogden Utah and for Big Brothers and Sisters of Utah. He is fluent in French and also possesses an intuition for engineering and a pas- sion for learning. Student Name: SHALAUNA THOMPSON Objective: BSChemEng Institution: University of Utah Name of Scholarship: Utah Engineers Council Scholarship Sponsor: BAE Systems Shalauna is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering at the University of Utah. She has been on the Dean’s list and is the recipient of the Mary and Mae Award for African American Women. She has interned with Williams assisting on a pipeline safety project and was the lead research assistant for three years for the Institute for Clean and Secure Energy working in a combustion lab. She has organized research efforts with other students at the U in collaboration with students attending USU and BYU. Shalauna has generously volunteered her time teaching English in the ZhiCheng School of Ningbo, China; helping refugee youth at the Hser Ner Moo Community Center and assisting in various inner-city schools. Student Name: MITCH SHEPHERD Objective: BSME Institution: University of Utah Name of Scholarship: ASHRAE Utah Chapter Sponsor: ASHRAE Utah Chapter Mitch is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engi- neering at the University of Utah. He is an Eagle Scout and currently works as an engineering intern and Van Boerum and Frank Associates. He is involved with the Utah Chapter of ASHRAE as the Student Chapter Officer. In high school, Mitch was the recipient of the New Century Scholarship. This lead to him receiving an associate’s degree at the same time he graduated from high school. Before study- ing at the U, he volunteered for two years in Russia where he learned to speak fluent Russian. Following graduation, Mitch desires to pursue a Master’s business. Student Name: JOSHUA PRATT Objective: BSME Institution: University of Utah Name of Scholarship: ASHRAE Utah Chapter Sponsor: ASHRAE Utah Chapter Joshua is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering at the University of Utah. He has been an engi- neering intern at Spectrum Engineers and BD Medical. He received the Departmental Scholarship award at the U as well as being Valedictorian at Westlake High School. Josh- ua volunteered in Argentina for two years where he learned to speak fluent Spanish. He is involved with the Cub Scout Program and has worked as the Bear Den Leader teaching young boys the importance of honesty, dependability and hard work – all values that help build great engineers.
