18 ENGINEER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE Scott Beckwith The Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering nominated Dr. Scott Beckwith, President of BTG Composites, Inc. for Engineer of the Year. Dr. Beckwith is Global Technical Director, SAMPE Journal Technical Ed- itor and Editor Journal of Advanced Materials. He has over 50 years’ experience in composite materials, structures, design/manufacturing – starting with pioneering research with 1st UK carbon fibers in 1967. Most notable, his work in resolving propellant grain cracking problem (1st Stage Minuteman motors) working with Thiokol colleagues and Dr. Edward Teller in the late 1960’s. He held 4 US Presiden- tial Appointments as the carbon fiber/materials industry expert negotiating fiber Export Control rules for Dept. of Commerce. He is a SAMPE Fellow, SME Jud Hall Awardee, SACMA Leadership Awardee and SAMPE Distinguished Service Awardee. He developed “resin infusion” technol- ogies, filament wound COPV’s, amusement rides (NASA Space Camp), underground petrol tanks (Petronas), Arctic drill systems for (solid methane), and numerous pressure vessels for the US Navy/Air Force/Army and NASA (Filament Wound Case-FWC Program). ENGINEER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE Rob Fabian The Utah Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has nominated Rob Fabian, a Program Manager at BAE Systems, for Utah’s Engineer of the Year. Col. Fabian has 26 years of success leading the people and managing the budgets, and processes required to deliver new and modernized space and missile systems on-time and under budget. He also has led the efforts to host events at Hill Air Force Base celebrating Engineers Week for many years. Rob is a skilled negotiator who is able to build consensus among multiple disparate organizations. Some of his most notable work includes the following: orchestrated eight simultaneous $7.2 Billiion ICBM mods, keeping all 150 missiles on alert; simultaneously reduced costs and increased capacity overseeing the overhaul of 15 depot programs; led the development of the Space Com- mand space situational awareness /counterspace plan.
