24 Congratulations UEC Scholarship Winners! CORY GOATES Mechanical Engineering Utah State University VBFA Scholarship Cory has a 4.00 GPA, is a member of Tau Beta Pi, and has been selected as an Engineering Writing Center Writing Consultant for other students to benefit from. Cory has a computer science minor and is active in the Bridgerland Amateur Radio Lab. He is an intern at Bioenergy Tech- nologies and a member of both the Experimental Rocket Propulsion Club and AIAA. One professor stated: “Cory is easily in the top 1% of all those I’ve recommended”. He is Tenor Section Leader in his Church Choir and a member of the University Chorale. Jed Lyman, representing VBFA, presents scholarship to Cory Goates NATHAN GUYMON Biological Engineering Utah State University Northrup Grumman Scholarship Nathan’s focus is sustainable wastewater treatment technol- ogies. He said in his application: “Adaptability is the prin- cipal word that defines me as a student, future engineer, and overall person. I strive to never limit myself to one sole avenue of learning…”. Nathan was awarded 2nd place (re- gional) for scientific photos from the Institute of Biological Engineering and a 2nd place for his video from the Interna- tional Solid Waste Association. He is a member of the USU Water Polo Club, a Spanish translator, and a reading tutor. Chris Phillips, representing Northrop Grumman, presents scholarship to Nathan Guymon SYDNEY TAYLOR Mechanical Engineering Utah State University Northrup Grumman Scholarship Sydney is a collegiate cross country team member and ironman competitor who is on the engineering student council and participates in a symphonic wind orchestra. Her research works to quantify the complex inclination effects in bottle emptying using numerical simulations. She intends to use this knowledge to suggest guidelines to prevent flow disruptions in long, inclined pipes. One reference said: “Ms. Taylor embodies the ideal rising engineer, exceling with remarkable ease in all her undertakings…Clarity of thought, rigor, determination, dedication, and genuine inquisitiveness” Chris Phillips presents scholarship to Sydney Taylor
